Brindisi (English spelling)
A port city and capital of the Brindisi Province in Puglia, in the eastern tip of southern Italy. It faces the Adriatic Sea and was formerly known as Brentesium in Greek and Brundisium in Latin, and was a port connecting it to Greece. It became a Roman city in 266 BC, and half a century later it became a base for resistance against Hannibal. Around the 2nd century BC, it gained importance as the end point of the Appian Way leading from Rome. After that, the city saw successive changes of rulers, and in 1071 it was occupied by the Normans, who prospered as a departure port for the Crusaders. It later developed with the opening of the Suez Canal. Today, it is mainly a fishing port, and one of the centers of industrialization in southern Italy. Fisheries, canning, and petrochemical industries are carried out here. The city has a monumental column marking the end of the Appian Way, and a cathedral built in the 12th century. Population: 91,778 (estimated 1991).
