Chemical formula: HAuCl ₄ . It is obtained by reacting gold with chlorine in hydrochloric acid.

2Au＋3Cl ₂ ＋2HCl→2HAuCl ₄

It is a golden or reddish yellow crystal (monoclinic system) that is highly deliquescent. It corrodes the skin, and when its aqueous solution is exposed to light, it deposits purple colloidal gold on the surface. When heated, it decomposes into chlorine, hydrogen chloride, and gold. Its specific gravity is about 3.9, and it is easily soluble in water and alcohol, and soluble in ether. It is used in photography, gold plating, the manufacture of ruby glass, and as a reagent for alkaloids.
