Mokkotsu (English spelling)

Japanese: 没骨 - もっこつ（英語表記）mo-gu

One of the colored painting techniques in Chinese painting. The traditional and basic Chinese painting technique was to outline shapes and apply color to make the outline clear, but there were already examples of mountain paintings in the Han, Wei, and Six Dynasties periods that were painted directly in color without drawing outlines, and this technique is thought to have continued into the Sui and Tang periods. It is believed that the mokkotsu technique was also adopted in landscape painting at the end of the Tang period, around the Northern Song period. The mokkotsu technique first showed its full expressive effect in the flower and bird paintings of the Xu family of Jiangnan (→Huang and Xu two figures), and together with the Huang family's Goulet-filled color painting technique, it dominated Chinese flower and bird painting for a long time.

中国画における彩色画法の一つ。中国の伝統的，基本的画法は，形態を描線でくくって色彩を施し，骨法を明らかにすることであったが，漢・魏・六朝時代すでに輪郭線を描かないで，直接に色彩で描いた山岳図の作例があり，この画法が隋・唐時代に及んだものとみられる。唐末，北宋頃は山水画にも没骨の手法が取入れられたと推測される。没骨画法が十分な表現効果をみせたのは北宋初め，江南の徐氏 (→黄・徐二体 ) の花鳥画で，黄氏の勾勒填彩 (こうろくてんさい) 画法とともに，長く中国花鳥画を支配した。
