Small bleeding the size of an azuki bean or smaller occurs due to the rupture of capillaries. Larger bleeding is called an ecchymosis. It is considered an important symptom in diagnosing death by asphyxiation. It is thought to be caused by increased intracapillary pressure, increased permeability of the capillary wall due to hypoxic or anoxic conditions, and spasms of the capillary wall, and can appear in the palpebral conjunctiva, bulbar conjunctiva, oral mucosa, pharyngeal mucosa, pulmonary pleura, thymic capsule, pericardium, epicardium, and renal pelvic mucosa. Extravasation spots on the pulmonary pleura seen in cases of death by asphyxiation are called Tarjoux spots. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
