An ancient Greek philologist and grammarian from Ephesus in Asia Minor. A student of the literary scholar Philetas, he became the first director of the Library of Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy II, and edited the texts of poets such as Homer, Hesiod, Anacreon, and Pindar. Although his approach was quite subjective, he made a particularly great contribution by creating a "Dictionary" of Homer, and by comparatively studying various manuscripts to provide the first academically based edits.
