[Establishing a foundation for life]
The northern coast of Hangzhou Bay, which lies on the southern coast of the Yangtze River Delta, was originally located near Mount Wangpan, about 20 km offshore from the present coast. However, as development of the Yangtze River basin progressed since the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, large amounts of sediment were brought in, causing the tip of the delta to extend eastward into the sea, and as a result of changes in the tidal currents, the bay coast was eroded and rapidly retreated.
