…After serving as a professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and other institutions, he became Germany's first professor of physical chemistry at the University of Leipzig in 1871. In 1853, together with Franz Rudolph Franz (1827-1901), he discovered the Wiedemann-Franz law, which states that the ratio of the thermal conductivity to the electrical conductivity of a metal is constant at the same temperature regardless of the type of metal. He also succeeded JC Poggendorf as editor of the Annals of Physics and Chemistry, and wrote the 19th century compilations on electromagnetism, Galvanic Electricity and Electricity.
