Windsurfing - Windsurfing (English spelling)

It is a marine sport that combines surfing with sailing. It was developed and invented in 1967 by Americans Hoyle Schweitzer (1933- ) and Jim Drake (1929-2012), and debuted in 1970. It spread to Europe the following year in 1971, and was introduced to Japan in 1973 (Showa 48) by Haruhide Suzuki (1941-1988). The board weighs about 28 kilograms, is 3.7 meters long and 60 centimeters wide, can be easily transported by car, and can be enjoyed anywhere there is water and wind.

Events include freestyle, known as gymnastics of the sea, slalom, long distance, speed trial, and wave riding and jumping. At the Olympic Games, sailing was added as one of the sailing events for men at the 1984 Los Angeles Games and for women at the 1992 Barcelona Games (the name of the event was changed from yachting to sailing at the 2000 Sydney Games). Since the 2008 Beijing Games, the "RS:X class" boats have been used as the event name at the Olympics. The longest sailing distance is 4,780 km across the Atlantic Ocean, set by Christian Marty (1946-2000) of France in 1982. In speed trials (a competition to see who can complete 500 metres the fastest), Thierry Bielak (1956- ) of France recorded a speed of 83.96 km/h in 1993, which has since been improved to 98.65 km/h, set by Antoine Albeau (1972- ) of France in 2015 (2018).

サーフィンに帆を組み合わせたマリンスポーツ。1967年アメリカのホイル・シュワイツァーHoyle Schweitzer（1933―　）とジム・ドレイクJim Drake（1929―2012）によって開発、考案され、1970年にデビューした。翌1971年ヨーロッパにも広まり、日本へは1973年（昭和48）鈴木東英(はるひで)（1941―1988）によって紹介された。ボードの重量は約28キログラム、長さ3.7メートル、幅60センチメートルほどで、車で簡単に持ち運びができ、水と風さえあればどこでも楽しめる。

　競技種目としては、海の体操競技といわれるフリースタイル、スキーの回転競技にあたるスラローム、ロングディスタンス、スピードトライアル、ウェイブ・ライディング・アンド・ジャンピングなどがある。オリンピックには、男子が1984年のロサンゼルス大会から、女子が1992年のバルセロナ大会から、ヨット競技の種目の一つとして加えられた（2000年のシドニー大会から競技名はヨットからセーリングに変更）。2008年の北京(ペキン)大会以降、競技艇として「RS:X級（アールエスエックス）」が使用されており、これがオリンピックにおける種目名となっている。距離の帆走記録としては、1982年フランスのクリスティアン・マルティChristian Marty（1946―2000）が行った4780キロメートルの大西洋横断がある。スピードトライアル（500メートルの所要時間を競う）では、1993年フランスのティエリー・ビエラクThierry Bielak（1956―　）が時速83.96キロメートルを記録して以降も更新され、2015年フランスのアントワーヌ・アルボーAntoine Albeau（1972―　）が出した時速98.65キロメートルが世界最速記録となっている（2018）。
