The Consciousness of Zeno (English: The Consciousness of Zeno)

A novel by Italian author Italo Svevo. It took him three years to write it, and he self-published it in 1923, when he was 62 years old. The story is about Zeno Corsini, a bourgeoisie man who has fallen into idleness, who, in an attempt to recover, honestly accepts his own life and analyzes his disillusionment, contradictions, and suffering, with the advice of a psychiatrist. Through the keen insight of E. Montale and the efforts of J. Joyce, the old Trieste writer, who had been isolated until then, was firmly established in the world. It is a work that opened up a new course for 20th century literature, with its method of breaking with traditional structure and style by making full use of an analysis of the innermost depths of consciousness, full of irony and metaphor, and its theme of questioning the conditions of life of modern people by superimposing individual neurosis on the illnesses of the historical period of interwar Europe.

イタリアの作家イータロ・ズベーボの小説。3年の歳月を費やして、1923年、62歳のときに自費出版で発表。無為に陥ったブルジョアジーの主人公、ゼーノ・コルシーニが、自己回復を求めて、精神科医の助言によって、己の一生を真率に認(したた)め、幻滅と撞着(どうちゃく)と苦悩を分析するという物語で、E・モンターレの炯眼(けいがん)とJ・ジョイスの尽力を介して、それまで孤立していたトリエステの老作家の名を不動のものにした。アイロニーと暗喩(あんゆ)に満ちた、意識の内奥への分析を駆使して伝統的な構成・文体を破った手法、個人の神経症を両大戦間のヨーロッパという歴史的な時代の病に重ねて現代人の生の条件を問うた主題で、20世紀文学の新たな針路を切り開いた作品である。
