It refers to an institution that collects and preserves films for research and appreciation, or an audiovisual library that holds films of educational value and makes them available for use in the community. The forerunner of the former was the Cinemathèque Française in Paris (founded in 1936) led by H. Langlois, which screened films from all over the world, past and present, and influenced the birth of the Nouvelle Vague. Other notable examples include the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the United States and the Goss Film Fond in the former Soviet Union. In Japan, the current Film Center was established as part of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, when it was founded in 1952. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
