Samson and Delilah - Samson and Dalila

An opera in three acts and four scenes by French composer Saint-Saëns. Based on the story of Samson, a hero of ancient Israel, as told in the Book of Judges in the Old Testament, the libretto by Ferdinand Lemaire was written in French. The entire opera premiered in Weimar in 1877. It is one of the few operas to feature a mezzo-soprano (Delilah) in the lead role, and the line "Your voice opens my heart" in the second act is particularly popular. The second act, which is dominated by soloists, is surrounded by the first and third acts, which are dominated by the chorus, but overall, the emphasis is on the exotic atmosphere created by the attractive melodies and colorful orchestration, rather than on the drama of the story.

フランスの作曲家サン・サーンスのオペラ。3幕4場。『旧約聖書』「士師記」に伝わる古代イスラエルの英雄サムソンの物語に基づく、フェルディナンド・ルメールのフランス語台本による。1877年に全曲がワイマールで初演された。メゾ・ソプラノ（デリラ）を主役にした数少ないオペラの一つであり、とりわけ第2幕の「あなたの声に私の心は開く」は広く親しまれている。独唱が活躍する第2幕を、合唱が中心となる第1、第3幕が囲む構成となっているが、全体としてみると、物語のドラマ性よりも、魅力ある旋律と色彩豊かな管弦楽法によって生み出される異国的な雰囲気に重点が置かれているといえよう。
