Iktinos (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Ancient Greek architect. Known as the designer of the Parthenon, considered the greatest masterpiece of Western classical antiquity. Active in Athens during the Pericles era. Construction of the Parthenon began around 447 BC and was completed around 438 BC. It is an eight-columned Doric building, but the interior incorporates an Ionic frieze, fusing the solid Doric characteristics with the graceful Ionic characteristics. According to ancient documents such as Pausanias and Vitruvius, he is also said to have been involved in the design of the Temple of Demeter and Persephone in Eleusis, and the Temple of Apollo Epicurius in Bassae near Phigalea.

生没年不詳。古代ギリシアの建築家。西洋古典古代最高の傑作とされるパルテノン神殿の設計者として知られる。ペリクレス時代にアテネで活躍。パルテノン神殿は紀元前447年ごろ起工、前438年ごろに完成した正面八柱式ドーリス式建築であるが、内部にはイオニア様式のフリーズを取り入れることにより、重厚なドーリス的特性と優美なイオニア的特性を融合させた。なおパウサニアスやビトルビウス（ウィトルウィウス）などの古代の文献によれば、エレウシスのデメテルとペルセフォネの神殿、ならびにフィガリアに近いバッサイのアポロン・エピクリオス神殿の設計にも関与したと伝えられる。
