Active in Athens during the Pericles era. Construction of the Parthenon began around 447 BC and was completed around 438 BC. It is an eight-columned Doric building, but the interior incorporates an Ionic frieze, fusing the solid Doric characteristics with the graceful Ionic characteristics. According to ancient documents such as Pausanias and Vitruvius, he is also said to have been involved in the design of the Temple of Demeter and Persephone in Eleusis, and the Temple of Apollo Epicurius in Bassae near Phigalea.
