Shingen Embankment

This embankment is located in Kai City, in the west of the Kofu Basin in Yamanashi Prefecture, on the east bank of the Kamanashi River. It is famous for being constructed by Takeda Shingen during the Sengoku period. On the west bank of this area is the alluvial fan of the Midai River, where the Midai River joins the Kamanashi River. The Midai River was a rough river and often caused flooding. Shingen began construction in 1542 (Tenbun 11), and it took about 20 years to complete the embankment. Its unique features include fixing the flow of the Midai River upstream to avoid the force of the water, planting trees on the large 1,800-meter embankment, and building a kasumi-tei (discontinuous embankment) called ganko (stepping geese) on the riverbank, a flood control method that is still highly regarded today. It is a 25-minute walk from JR Ryuo Station.

山梨県甲府盆地西部、釜無川(かまなしがわ)東岸の堤防で、甲斐市(かいし)にある。戦国時代、武田信玄が構築したものとして有名。この地は西岸に御勅使(みだい)川の扇状地があり、御勅使川が釜無川に合流するところにあたっているが、御勅使川は荒れ川で水害をしばしばおこした。信玄は1542年（天文11）から工事を始め約20年の歳月をかけて堤を完成した。特色は、御勅使川の流れを上流に固定して水勢を避け、1800メートルにわたる大堤防に樹木を植え、河岸には雁行(がんこう)とよばれる霞堤(かすみてい)（不連続に設けられた堤防）を設けたもので、この治水法は今日でも高く評価されている。JR竜王駅から徒歩25分。
