Arithmetic mean

Japanese: 相加平均 - そうかへいきん

For n numbers a ₁ , a ₂ ,……, a _n , the sum of these numbers divided by n, (a ₁ +a ₂ +……+a _n )/n, is called the arithmetic mean or average of a ₁ , a ₂ ,……, a _n . For n numbers a ₁ , a ₂ ,……, a _n , the function of x, (xa ₁ ) ² +(xa ₂ ) ² +……+(xa _n ) ²
takes its minimum value when x is equal to the arithmetic mean of a ₁ , a ₂ , …, a _n . Also, the reciprocal of the arithmetic mean of the reciprocal of a _i , 1/a _i, is called the harmonic mean of a ₁ , a ₂ , …, a _n .

n個の数a₁,a₂,……,a_nに対して、これらの総和をnで割ったもの(a₁+a₂+……+a_n)/nを、a₁,a₂,……,a_nの相加平均または算術平均という。与えられたn個の数a₁,a₂,……,a_nに対して、xの関数
　　(x-a₁)²+(x-a₂)²+……+(x-a_n)²
が最小値をとるのはxがa₁,a₂,……,a_nの相加平均に等しい場合である。またa_iの逆数1/a_iの相加平均の逆数をa₁,a₂,……,a_nの調和平均という。
