[Died] 8 April 217. Carrhae Roman Emperor (reigned 198-217). Co-ruled with his father, Emperor Septimius Severus, until 211. Married at age 14, then murdered his wife. After ascending to the throne, he fought with his brother Geta for control of the throne, murdered his brother and many of his friends, and seized real power. He built a large bath in Rome (→The Baths of Caracalla) and indulged in debauchery. In 212, he issued the Antonine Edict, granting Roman citizenship to all free people in the empire, and attempted to increase taxes. In 212-213, he left domestic affairs to his mother and led an expedition to conquer the Germanic peoples, and then in 216-217, he led an expedition to Parthia, but was assassinated during the expedition. He dreamed of becoming a second Alexander III (the Great), and was described as the greatest tyrant in Roman history.

ローマ皇帝 (在位 198～217) 。 211年まで父セプチミウス・セウェルス帝と共治。 14歳で結婚し，その後，妻を殺害。即位後，弟ゲタと主導権争いをし，弟とその友人多数を殺害し，実権を掌握。ローマに大浴場を建設して (→カラカラ帝の大浴場 ) 淫逸にふけり，また，212年には帝国の全自由民にローマ市民権を賦与するアントニヌス勅法を発布，租税の増徴をはかった。 212～213年内政を母にゆだねてゲルマン討伐の遠征を行ない，次いで 216～217年パルティア遠征を行なったが，その途上暗殺された。第2のアレクサンドロス3世 (大王) を夢見，ローマ史上随一の暴君と評された。
