Born: 4 April 188, Lugdunum
[Died] 8 April 217. Carrhae Roman Emperor (reigned 198-217). Co-ruled with his father, Emperor Septimius Severus, until 211. Married at age 14, then murdered his wife. After ascending to the throne, he fought with his brother Geta for control of the throne, murdered his brother and many of his friends, and seized real power. He built a large bath in Rome (→The Baths of Caracalla) and indulged in debauchery. In 212, he issued the Antonine Edict, granting Roman citizenship to all free people in the empire, and attempted to increase taxes. In 212-213, he left domestic affairs to his mother and led an expedition to conquer the Germanic peoples, and then in 216-217, he led an expedition to Parthia, but was assassinated during the expedition. He dreamed of becoming a second Alexander III (the Great), and was described as the greatest tyrant in Roman history.
