1872‐1909 British intellectual. His Korean name was Bae Seol. In 1904, he traveled to Korea as a correspondent for the London Daily News, and in July of the same year, together with Yang Ki-duk and others, he founded the Korean Daily News in Seoul, where he became its president. The Government-General of Korea used its extraterritoriality as a British citizen to suppress the paper, which advocated anti-Japanese sentiment, and engaged in diplomatic maneuvers with the British government to expel him from the country. As a result, he was tried twice in consular courts by the British Consul-General in Seoul, in October 1907 and June 1908, and was sentenced to three weeks in prison in Shanghai in June 1908.
