François Joseph Victor Broussais

French physician. Born in Saint-Malo to a physician's son, he studied medicine at the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Saint-Malo, then entered the naval medical school in Brest, earning a degree by serving on board a ship. In 1798, he entered the University of Paris, where he received his degree in 1802. He became a military surgeon and accompanied Napoleon to battles around Europe. In 1814, he returned to Paris and became a professor at the Val-de-Grâce Military Hospital, where he lectured on clinical medicine and gained popularity. In 1830, he became a professor at the University of Paris. He believed that gastrointestinal catarrh was the root cause of all diseases, and argued that the key to pathology was to investigate the pathological condition of the stomach, and recommended dietary therapy and local bloodletting using leeches.

フランスの医師。サン･マロで医師の子に生まれ，サン･マロのオテル･ディユ病院で医学を習い，ついでブレストの海軍軍医学校に入り乗艦勤務で学資を蓄えた後，1798年パリ大学に進学し1802年学位を得た。軍医となりナポレオンに従ってヨーロッパ各地を転戦，14年パリに帰ってバル･ド･グラース陸軍病院教授となり臨床医学を講じて人気を博した。30年パリ大学教授。胃腸カタルがあらゆる病気の根本原因になると考え，胃の病的状態を究明することが病理学の鍵だと主張し，食養生とヒルによる局部瀉血（しやけつ）を推奨した。
