1772‐1838 French physician. Born in Saint-Malo to a physician's son, he studied medicine at the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Saint-Malo, then entered the naval medical school in Brest, earning a degree by serving on board a ship. In 1798, he entered the University of Paris, where he received his degree in 1802. He became a military surgeon and accompanied Napoleon to battles around Europe. In 1814, he returned to Paris and became a professor at the Val-de-Grâce Military Hospital, where he lectured on clinical medicine and gained popularity. In 1830, he became a professor at the University of Paris. He believed that gastrointestinal catarrh was the root cause of all diseases, and argued that the key to pathology was to investigate the pathological condition of the stomach, and recommended dietary therapy and local bloodletting using leeches.
