Pelagic sediments of biological origin containing more than 50% calcium carbonate. They cover nearly half of the entire ocean floor. They are divided into foraminiferal ooze and coccolith ooze. Calcareous ooze is mainly composed of plankton remains, so it tends to form in places where plankton proliferates and assimilates, reducing carbon dioxide and decreasing the solubility of calcium carbonate. This is thought to be the reason why calcareous ooze is common on the seafloor at depths of 2000 to 4000 meters in equatorial regions.
