It is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere's cold zone, and in Japan, it is common in Hokkaido and the volcanic plateaus north of central Honshu. It produces white, red-tinged, urn-shaped flowers in early summer, and in autumn it produces spherical, purple-black fruits 6-7mm in diameter that ripen. The shape of the fruits varies considerably, from flat to pear-shaped to cylindrical, and there are also fruits of different sizes.
