...A deciduous shrub of the Ericaceae family, it is one of the wild species closely related to blueberries. It is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere's cold zone, and in Japan, it is common in Hokkaido and the volcanic plateaus north of central Honshu. It can grow from about 10cm tall creeping above the ground to over 1m tall in the forest. It produces white, red-tinged, urn-shaped flowers in early summer, and in autumn it produces spherical, purple-black fruits 6-7mm in diameter that ripen. The shape of the fruits varies considerably, from flat to pear-shaped to cylindrical, and there are also fruits of different sizes. Seeds are sown on crushed sphagnum moss, and in cooler regions, they can be grown in pots with peat moss. ...
