…Levski and others established the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Revolution in 1871, and traveled around Bulgaria to set up many local committees of revolutionary organizations, but Levski was arrested and executed in 1873, midway through the movement, and his leadership was taken over by Botev and others. The uprising broke out in Koprivshtitsa and Panagjurište in May 1876 (April in the lunar calendar), with little preparation. However, it did not spread throughout Bulgaria, and was instead suppressed by irregular soldiers of the Ottoman Empire, as well as Circassians and Tatars who had migrated from southern Russia at the time, and about 15,000 residents were massacred. …
