...In Edo at the end of the Edo period, the Kiyu Shoran recorded that "there were two or three places selling roasted sweet potatoes in every town," and the situation was the same in Kyoto and Osaka.

Depending on the season, roasted sweet potato vendors sold steamed sweet potatoes, and in the sweet potato off-season, they also sold boiled taro called "kinukatsugi." It is unclear when they first came into existence, but Shin Ui-han, who came to Japan as a member of a Korean mission in 1719, wrote in his book Kaiyuroku that roasted sweet potatoes were sold at a roadside stall in Hinooka, Kyoto.
