Japanese: 世代促進 - せだいそくしん

An operation to shorten the time between individual generations in order to efficiently improve varieties. Crop breeding usually takes many years. In particular, when cross-breeding is used, successive generations are selected until the genetic material becomes uniform enough for practical use, from a state in which the genetic material has become uneven due to cross-breeding. This means that it takes about 10 to 15 years for a new variety to reach the stage of widespread use. Therefore, the usual cultivation method of passing one generation per year is changed to one in which as many generations as possible pass in a year, especially in the early stages of the breeding process, in order to shorten the breeding period.

品種改良を効率的に進めるために，個々の世代の経過を短縮する操作。作物の品種改良は長年月かかるのが普通である。とくに交雑育種法を採用した場合，交雑によって遺伝質が不均一になった状態から，実用に耐える程度の均一な状態になるまで，順次世代を重ねて選抜を加えていくので，新品種として普及の段階に入るまでに，およそ10～15年を必要とする。そこで1年に1世代を経過させるという普通の栽培方式を改めて，とくに育種過程の初期の段階に，1年間にできるだけ多くの世代を経過させ，育種の年限を短縮しようとするものである。
