…He is considered one of the original eight gods in Hermopolitan theology, but his rise as a great god began during the Middle Kingdom (12th Dynasty) when he replaced Mentu as the patron deity of Thebes and assumed the position of national deity. In particular, during the New Kingdom, he received a temporary blow from the religious reforms of Akhenaten, but his influence as the patron deity of the great empire reached its peak, and he was syncretized with the sun god Ra of Heliopolis to become Amen-Ra, a creator god and "king of the gods." He formed the Theban triad with the goddess Mut as his wife and the moon god Khons as his son, and the temple of Karnak, its main temple, became the largest temple in Egypt through the expansion and reconstruction of successive kings from the Middle Kingdom to the Ptolemaic dynasty. …
