This temple was located in Sakata, Asuka Village, Takaichi County, Nara Prefecture. It is said that Kurataku Tasuna became a monk at this temple to pray for the recovery of Emperor Yomei (reigned 585-587), and that the name originated from a grass hut built by his father, Kurataku Tatto, during the reign of Emperor Keitai. It was chosen along with Asuka Temple and others for Emperor Tenmu's Musha Tournament, and was also known as Kongo Temple in the Heian period and was a branch temple of Tonomine, but fell into decline after the Middle Ages. Excavations in 1973 unearthed the remains of a 7th century pond and earthenware with ink inscriptions bearing the name "Sakata Temple."
