A general term for mental disorders that develop in old age. In principle, it does not include disorders that developed before old age and continue into old age, or disorders that recur in old age. The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Terminology of Mental Disorders (DSM III), created in 1980, classifies it as an organic mental disorder, but the classification announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) headquarters in 1970 seems to be more appropriate. According to this, there are four major categories of disorders: (1) those caused by aging brain lesions, (2) affective disorders, (3) delusional symptoms, and (4) personality disorders. 老年期に発症した精神障害の総称。老年期以前に発症した疾患が老年期まで続いているものや老年期になってから再発したものは原則として含めない。1980年に作られた《アメリカ精神医学会精神障害診断統計用語集(DSM III)》では器質性精神障害のなかに分類しているが,1970年に世界保健機関(WHO)本部で発表した分類が妥当と思われる。それによると,(1)脳の老化病変によるもの,(2)情動障害,(3)妄想症状群,(4)人格障害に4大別することができるという。
