A general term for mental disorders that develop in old age. In principle, it does not include disorders that developed before old age and continue into old age, or disorders that recur in old age. The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Terminology of Mental Disorders (DSM III), created in 1980, classifies it as an organic mental disorder, but the classification announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) headquarters in 1970 seems to be more appropriate. According to this, there are four major categories of disorders: (1) those caused by aging brain lesions, (2) affective disorders, (3) delusional symptoms, and (4) personality disorders.
