A river port city on the Salm River, which flows west through central Senegal in West Africa. It is located about 50 km from the mouth of the river and can accommodate ships of up to 6,000 tonnes. It has a population of 243,209 (2001). It is known as the export port for groundnuts, the country's number one commercial crop produced in the Salm River basin. It has a groundnut oil mill and a leather processing factory. It is a key railway point between the capital Dakar and Bamako in Mali, and also has an airport.
