When German mathematician F. Klein became professor at the University of Erlangen in 1872, he published a research plan that included his views on geometry, in which he saw through the underlying essence of geometry, discussed the various geometries that had existed up to that time from a unified perspective, and claimed that "geometry is a science that, given a space and a group of transformations that act on it, studies the properties of the figures in that space that remain unchanged under any of the transformations that belong to that group." Today, this claim is simply called the Erlangen Program. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
