A collection of Edo Shogunate laws. Many ministries published collections of historical materials related to their jurisdictions in the early Meiji period, and among them, the Ministry of Justice's "Tokugawa Kinrei Ko" (62 volumes) and "Tokugawa Kinrei Ko: Goshu" (40 volumes) are outstanding. The former classifies and records Edo Shogunate laws into categories of nobles, samurai, temples and shrines, commoners, the whole country, and foreign countries, while the latter is based on the "Kajo Ruiten" (1767), which records the historical materials of the compilation of the Kujikata Osada Megaki (Civil Affairs Laws) enacted by the Shogunate in 1742 (Kanpo 2), and adds related laws, precedents, etc. to it. It goes without saying that both are essential books for research on the legal history of the Edo Shogunate, but they are also essential books for research on the economy, politics, society, etc. of the same period. There are several published versions, but the most recent is compiled by the Legal History Society and edited by Ishii Ryosuke, and includes a separate volume that includes a chronological index of laws and regulations in addition to relevant historical materials. [Ryosuke Ishii] "Thoughts on the Tokugawa Prohibitions," edited by the Legal History Society and edited by Ryosuke Ishii, Vol. 1 and 2 and a supplementary volume, total of 11 volumes (1959-61, Sobunsha)" Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
