Sumo wrestler's 1,000 ryo flag - Sekitori Senryo nobori

Joruri Gidayubushi. Sewamono (domestic drama). 9 acts. Commonly known as "Senryo Nobori." A collaboration between Chikamatsu Hanji, Miyoshi Shouraku, Takeda Bunkichi, Takeda Koizumo, Yatami Heishichi, and Takemoto Saburobei. First performed at the Takemotoza Theater in Osaka in August 1767 (Meiwa 4). Modeled after the sumo wrestlers Inagawa and Sendagawa, who were popular in Osaka at the time, it is a sumo piece, and the second act, "Iwakawa (Inagawa in Kabuki) Nai" and "Sumojo" are still performed today. The sumo wrestler Iwakawa is trying to win a match against Tetsugatake, the backer of his love rival Kuhei, in order to raise 200 ryo for Reizaburo, the young master of Tsuruya, to whom he is indebted, to buy the prostitute Nishikigi. However, his wife Otowa finds out and sells herself to make money. In the middle of the match on the ring, someone calls out, "200 ryo presented, from your favor," and Iwakawa bravely defeats Tetsugatake. The story is known for the emotional droning of "Kami-Kusuki," in which Otowa combs her husband's hair while trying to console him in his troubles. The following year, a revised version of the work was co-written by Yatami Heishichi and Namiki Shoza, titled "Sekitori ni Daisho Buzuke," which premiered.
