Daihachi Okamoto

Japanese:
Daihachi Okamoto

He was a close aide to Tokugawa Ieyasu, Honda Kozuke no Suke Masazumi. He accepted bribes from Arima Harunobu, a Christian feudal lord in Hizen, under false pretenses, and was executed when this was discovered. In 1609 (Keicho 14), outside the port of Nagasaki, the Portuguese ship Nossa Senhora da Graça was sunk by forces from Arima. After this, Daihachi, a close aide to Honda Masazumi, who was a Christian with the religious name Paulo, accepted bribes from Arima Harunobu and declared to Harunobu that part of Hizen, which was formerly Arima's territory, would be given to him as a reward for his contributions in the incident. The truth was soon discovered, and Daihachi was burned at the stake on May 6, 1609, after his property was confiscated. Arima Harunobu was also sentenced to death for this incident. This incident marked the beginning of the shogunate's suppression of Christianity and its ban on Christianity.
