A deep-sea fish of the Alepocephalidae family of the order Argentiformes in the class Osteichthyes. Its body is black and slender, reaching a length of about 30 cm. It is widely distributed in the eastern Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean, including Sagami Bay, Suruga Bay, Tosa Bay, the Okinawa Trough, southern Taiwan, and the Philippines. It lives in deep-sea areas of 310 to 1,440 meters, and is rarely caught with bottom trawls. Its skin is thick and has no scales except on the lateral line. Its dorsal and anal fins are located at the rear of its body, and it has no adipose fin. Its body is dark purple, and tiny light-emitting organs are scattered throughout. There are more than 30 species of Alepocephalidae that live in the deep seas around the world. Of these, about 20 species have been identified in Japan from the deep seas on the Pacific coast.
