Although it has the word "pineapple" in its name, it is not related to the pineapple, but is a bulbous plant of the lily family so named because of the similar appearance of its flowers. About 10 species grow wild in South Africa and tropical Africa, and the South African species are particularly beautiful and are cultivated for decorative purposes. Eucomis comosa E. comosa Houtt. ( E. punctata L'Her.) grows several oblong-lanceolate leaves about 50 cm long from a bulb 8-12 cm in diameter. The flowers are greenish-white with a pink tint, and grow in large groups at the top of a thick flower stalk that stands upright between the leaves, about 2.5 cm in diameter.
