Ethan Frome

…He was one of the writers who left the country, and many of his works were set in Europe, but his most famous works dealt with New York and New England in the late 19th century, and he created intricate novels of customs incorporating the ethics and psychology of individuals. His works include “The House of Pleasure” (1905), in which a brilliant and beautiful woman dies torn between her ambition to marry and her true feelings; “Ethan Frome” (1911), which depicts the tragic love-hate that occurred in a New England farming village; “The Customs of a Country” (1913), which deals with the contrast between American and French customs; “The Innocent Age” (1920), which satirizes New York in the 1870s; and the tetralogy “Old New York” (1924). He also wrote more than 20 novels, short stories, poems, and travelogues, as well as a collection of essays, “How to Write a Novel” (1925), and a memoir, “Looking Back at the Past” (1934).
