An old town in Okawa District, eastern Kagawa Prefecture. It occupies the northern foot of the Sanuki Mountains, is long and narrow from north to south, and has an alluvial plain in the north. The main settlement developed as a temple town for Nagao-ji Temple, the 87th temple of the 88 Shikoku temples. It produces rice, vegetables, and fruit. It is served by the Kotoku Line and the Takamatsu-Kotohira Electric Railway Nagao Line, and many people commute to Takamatsu City. In April 2002, it merged with Tsuda Town, Okawa Town, Shido Town, and Samukawa Town to form Sanuki City. 47.43 km2 . Population: 13,446 (2000). 香川県東部,大川郡の旧町。讃岐(さぬき)山脈北麓を占め,南北に細長く,北部に沖積平野がある。主集落は四国八十八ヵ所87番札所長尾寺の門前町として発達。米,野菜,果樹などを産する。高徳線,高松琴平電鉄長尾線が通じ,高松市への通勤者も多い。2002年4月,津田町,大川町,志度町,寒川町と合併してさぬき市となる。47.43km2。1万3446人(2000)。
