A medieval samurai family. (1) A clan of the Okata clan based in Seki County, Hitachi Province. Among the various families of the Fujiwara Hidesato lineage that developed mainly in Shimotsuke Province, Okata Goro Masaie, a clan close to the Oyama and Naganuma clans, ruled Seki and called himself the Seki clan. Masaie's son Masahira is thought to have fallen into ruin after joining the Shida Yoshihiro Rebellion in 1183 (Juei 2), but his remaining brothers achieved great things in various ways. Machifusa Takanobu, who was the head priest of Mount Nikko and also served as a priest at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura, and Benkaku, who led his disciples in the Wada Battle in 1213 (Kenpo 1) and fought bravely, later becoming the head priest of Mount Nikko, were all Masahira's younger brothers.
