...In the old days, they were called Hosomi-ezu (thin maps), and were illustrated on a single sheet of paper, showing the names and ranks of the prostitutes employed by each household, as well as the owners of the prostitutes, ageya (ageya), teahouses, and other merchants and entertainers in the brothels. The oldest surviving one is the Eiri Ogazu (Eiri Daigazu) (with the title "Yoshiwara Oezu"), published in 1689 (Genroku 2) (the theory that it was published around the Manji/Kanbun period (1658-73) is incorrect). However, it is known that there was also a Yoshiwara Saomi-ezu published in the 5th year of the Jokyo period. ...
