Vākātaka Dynasty - Vākātaka

A dynasty that ruled the Deccan region of India from the late 3rd century to the mid-6th century. After the fall of the Satavahana dynasty that ruled the Deccan region, several dynasties arose, but this dynasty rose to power in Vidarbha, the center of the region, and around the 3rd to 4th centuries, the second ruler, Prabalasena I, expanded his power and became known as Samraj (overlord). During his son's time, the kingdom was divided into two, the eastern and western, and the eastern faction had its capital near Nagpur. In the early 5th century, Rudrasena II married the daughter of Chandragupta II of the Gupta dynasty, and after the death of her husband, she took real power and wielded influence in the Deccan with the help of the Gupta dynasty. The western faction had its capital in Bassagurma in northwestern Maharashtra, and Harishena appeared in the early 6th century, conquering the surrounding countries and becoming powerful. Caves 16 and 17 of Ajanta were built during his time. However, the dynasty fell into disuse in the mid-6th century, and its territory eventually came under the influence of the Chalukya dynasty.

インドのデカンで3世紀後半から6世紀中ごろまで支配した王朝。デカン一帯を支配したサータバーハナ朝が滅んだあとにはいくつかの王朝が興ったが、この王朝はその中央のビダルバに台頭し、3世紀から4世紀にかかるころ、第2代プラバラセーナ1世が勢力を拡大して、サムラージ（覇王）と称した。その子のとき王国は東西二つに分かれ、東の主派はナーグプル近くに都し、5世紀初めルドラセーナ2世はグプタ朝チャンドラグプタ2世の娘を娶(めと)り、彼女は夫王の死後実権を握り、グプタ朝の威勢を借りてデカンに勢力を振るった。西の分派はマハラシュトラ北西部のバッサグルマに都して、6世紀初めにハリシェーナが現れ、周辺の国を征服して強大となった。アジャンタの第16、17石窟(せっくつ)は彼のときにつくられた。だがこの王朝は6世紀中ごろに滅び、その領域はやがてチャールキヤ朝の勢力下に入った。
