This river originates at the southern foot of Mt. Sobaeksan in the Nanrig Mountain Range in the northwestern part of the Korean Peninsula, flows northwest and empties into the Yellow Sea (called the West Sea in the Korean Peninsula). It is 431 km long and has a drainage area of ​​20,135 square km. At Yongle, the Seongryong River joins the right bank, flows southwest, joins the Batan River at Deokgawa, flows south and turns west at Beichang. It flows south from Kaecheon, making a large bend. It joins the Boliu River at Jiangdong, joins the Nam River to the east of Pyongyang and the Bangjiang River to the west, increasing its water volume, and joins the Jaeryeong River at its mouth and empties into the Yellow Sea. The geology of the drainage basin is granite gneiss in the upper reaches, Korean and Daedong groups are exposed alternately around Pyongyang, and alluvial deposits downstream. The annual rainfall in the basin is 1,000 mm, of which 58.8%, or 10.6 billion cubic meters, flows into the sea. The basin is home to two major irrigation systems, Pyeongnam and Giyang, which irrigate about 80,000 square kilometers of rice paddies and farmland. The Taedong River is also rich in marine resources, including mullet, carp, and catfish.

朝鮮半島北西部、狼林(ろうりん)山脈中の小白山南麓(なんろく)に源を発し、北西流しながら黄海（朝鮮半島では西海とよぶ）に注ぐ川。全長431キロメートル、流域面積2万0135平方キロメートル。永楽で成竜江を右岸に入れ、西南流してから徳川で馬灘(ばたん)江を合流し、南下して北倉で流路を西方にとる。价川(かいせん)から大曲流しながら南流する。江東で沸流(ふつりゅう)江を入れ、平壌東方で南江、西方で普通江をあわせて水量を増し、河口で載寧江と合流して黄海に注ぐ。流域の地質は上流が花崗片麻(かこうへんま)岩、平壌付近が朝鮮系と大同系が交互に露出しており、下流が沖積層である。流域の年降水量は1000ミリメートルで、その58.8％の106億立方メートルは海に流れる。この流域には平南、岐陽の二大灌漑(かんがい)用水があり、約8万平方キロメートルの水田や畑を潤している。大同江にはボラ、コイ、ナマズなどの水産資源も豊富である。
