Japanese grosbeak (Japanese grosbeak)
A passerine bird of the family Fringillidae (illustration). It is about the same size as a starling, with a total length of about 23 cm. Its distinctive features are its black forehead, eyes, and crown, and its large yellow beak. Its body is light gray overall, its wings and tail are shiny black, and its wings have white stripes, making it very conspicuous when in flight. It is relatively sluggish and inactive. It is found in northeastern China, Primorsky Krai, the Korean peninsula, and Japan. In Japan, it breeds north of Honshu, and those in northern Japan migrate to central Honshu and south in winter. It lives in open areas with a mixture of shrubs, such as mountain deciduous broadleaf forests, secondary forests, and forest edges.
