Possible routes for inflation overseas include: (1) the prices of imported goods rise internationally, causing the prices of domestic products that use imported raw materials to rise; (2) foreign inflation strengthens international competitiveness, leading to an increase in exports, which tightens domestic demand and causes domestic prices to rise; and (3) for the same reason as (2) above, the balance of payments goes into surplus, causing an increase in the amount of currency, which leads to monetary easing and higher inflation expectations.
