German East Africa Company (English: Deutsch‐Ostafrikanische Gesellschaft)

A chartered company that received a royal charter from the German emperor in 1885. The German Colonization Company, founded by Carl Peters (1856-1918), obtained what it called protectorate treaties in 1884 from the chiefs of several tribes on the current mainland of Tanzania, across from Zanzibar. Based on this, the German government declared the area a German protectorate the following year, entrusting its governance to the German Colonization Company. The company's name was changed to the German East Africa Company, and Peters and his colleagues negotiated with the chiefs of Zanzibar to obtain the right to use the ports of Dar es Salaam and Pangani, as well as the coastal areas in which the chiefs had interests, duty-free for trade with the interior.
