From the Persian word qarban, meaning caravan. A traveling party made up of many people using camels and horses for a long inland journey. Caravans have been used for transportation since ancient times, mainly in the arid regions of Asia and Africa. Especially after the Arab conquests in the 7th century, many caravan routes were established from Central Asia in the east to the Maghreb region in the west and south of the Sahara Desert, and they became routes for the exchange of cultural artifacts between the East and the West and for pilgrims traveling to holy sites. In the Middle East, caravans are called caravan sarais. →Related article Silk Road Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
