From the Persian word qarban, meaning caravan. A traveling party made up of many people using camels and horses for a long inland journey. Caravans have been used for transportation since ancient times, mainly in the arid regions of Asia and Africa. Especially after the Arab conquests in the 7th century, many caravan routes were established from Central Asia in the east to the Maghreb region in the west and south of the Sahara Desert, and they became routes for the exchange of cultural artifacts between the East and the West and for pilgrims traveling to holy sites. In the Middle East, caravans are called caravan sarais.

ペルシア語カールバーンに由来し，隊商を意味する。内陸の大旅行のために多数の人びとが隊を組み，ラクダや馬などを用いて編成する旅行団。キャラバンによる交通はおもにアジア，アフリカの乾燥地帯で古くから行われた。とくに７世紀のアラブ軍による征服活動以降，東は中央アジアから西はマグリブ地方をへてサハラ砂漠以南まで，多くの隊商路ができ，東西の文物の交流や聖地に向かう巡礼団の旅のルートとなった。中東では隊商宿をキャラバン・サライと呼ぶ。
