A general term for the area along the French Mediterranean coast stretching from Cassis to Menton. It means "Azure Coast." It was named by the 19th century poet S. Liéjard. It is home to internationally famous resorts such as Saint-Tropez, Saint-Raphaël, Cannes, Antibes, and Nice. The mountains lie close to the sea, and there are many scenic sites with strangely shaped rocks. The climate is warm, with long hours of sunshine per year, 2,800 to 3,000 hours. The annual rainfall is 500 to 900 mm, but the summers are very dry, so the vegetation and houses have adapted to the conditions, creating a unique landscape.
