A deciduous tree of the Rosaceae family used as a garden tree or fruit tree. Also called medlar. It is distributed from southern Europe to southwestern Asia, and is cultivated quite widely in Europe. It was introduced to Japan from America in the early Meiji period, but has not become commonly cultivated. Currently, it is only used as a garden tree. It grows to a height of about 6m. The flowers are white or pale pink, about 4cm in diameter. One flower grows at the tip of each new shoot. There are many stamens and five styles. 庭木あるいは果樹として利用するバラ科の落葉小高木。メドラmedlarともいう。南ヨーロッパから西南アジアに分布し,ヨーロッパにかなり広く栽培されている。日本へは明治初期にアメリカから導入されたが,一般に栽培されるには至らなかった。現在では庭木として利用されているにすぎない。高さ6m前後となる。花は白色または淡紅色で径4cmほど。新梢の先端に1個つく。おしべは多く,花柱は5本。果実は秋に熟し,扁円形または洋梨形で,径3~5cm前後。
