A city in the northwest of Toyama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. It occupies the western Toyama Plain and the southern Hodatsu Hills, facing Toyama Bay. The central city developed as a castle town for Maeda Toshinaga, the lord of the Kaga domain. Although the castle was later abandoned, the city prospered as a commercial and industrial city, mainly producing copperware, ironware, and lacquerware, which the lord had protected and encouraged. On the west bank of the mouth of the Oyabe River is Fushiki, which has many large factories, and in 1964 it was designated as a new industrial city along with Toyama City. In 1986, Fushiki Toyama Port was designated a specific important port, and heavy chemical industrialization was promoted, leading to the development of the chemical, steel, and aluminum industries, as well as the traditional textile printing industry. The city is connected by the Hokuriku Shinkansen, the Ainokaze Toyama Railway, the Himi Line, the Johana Line, and the Manyo Line, and it continues to develop as a commercial and industrial city today. The Noto Peninsula Quasi-National Park is home to Amabarashi Coast, Shokoji Temple, and the Takaoka Great Buddha. In November 2005, the town of Fukuoka in Nishitonami County was incorporated. 富山県北西部の市。1889年市制。富山平野西部と宝達(ほうだつ)丘陵南部を占め，富山湾に面する。中心市街は加賀藩主前田利長の城下町として発展。のち廃城となったが，藩主が保護奨励した銅器，鉄器，漆器などを主とする商工業都市として繁栄した。小矢部川河口西岸には大工場の多い伏木(ふしき)があり，1964年富山市とともに新産業都市に指定された。1986年伏木富山港が特定重要港湾に指定されて重化学工業化が図られ，化学，鉄鋼，アルミ産業が発展，また伝統の捺染(なっせん)工業も行われる。北陸新幹線，あいの風とやま鉄道，氷見線，城端(じょうはな)線，および万葉線が通じ現在も商工業都市として発展している。能登半島国定公園に含まれる雨晴(あまばらし)海岸，勝興寺，高岡大仏などがある。2005年11月西砺波郡福岡町を編入。209.57km²。17万6061人（2010）。
