He learned navigation from his father, a merchant, and also studied Dutch-style surveying techniques. In 1669, he sailed a Chinese-built ship to Edo by order of the Nagasaki magistrate, Suetsugu Heizo. In 1675, he explored the Ogasawara Islands with Nakao Shozaemon and others on that ship by order of the shogunate, and published the Enpo Uninhabited Islands Expedition Record.
