Shimaya Ichizaemon
?-1690 An explorer in the early Edo period.
He learned navigation from his father, a merchant, and also studied Dutch-style surveying techniques. In 1669, he sailed a Chinese-built ship to Edo by order of the Nagasaki magistrate, Suetsugu Heizo. In 1675, he explored the Ogasawara Islands with Nakao Shozaemon and others on that ship by order of the shogunate, and published the Enpo Uninhabited Islands Expedition Record. He died on July 16, 1684. He was born in Hizen Nagasaki.

貿易商の父に航海術をならい,オランダ流の測量術もまなぶ。寛文9年長崎代官の末次平蔵の命で唐船造りの船を江戸へ回航。延宝3年(1675)幕命によりその船で中尾庄左衛門らと小笠原諸島を探検し,「延宝無人島巡見記」をあらわした。元禄(げんろく)4年7月16日死去。肥前長崎出身。
