A typical insect of the Orthoptera family, Rhinoidae, commonly seen in Japan (illustration). It was named after its body color, which resembles that of a horse, and because it has traditionally lived near the hearths of homes. In the past, it was called Itodo, but this insect appears to refer to the hearth cricket. It is about 15 mm long. It is a light brown, wingless insect. Its long antennae and legs are noticeable. The femurs and tibias of the hind legs are particularly long, and the upper surface of the tibias is lined with fine spines. Its rounded body and color are reminiscent of a shrimp, and it is also called shrimp cricket because its living environment is similar to that of a cricket.
