A kind of chivalrous and outlaw group that emerged in Western Anatolia from the 18th century onwards, acting as guards for caravan routes, guides, and coffee shop owners. The origins of this group are unclear, but it is believed that they were originally irregular soldiers involved in maintaining law and order in the region. As Mediterranean trade between the Ottoman Empire and Western European countries expanded after the 18th century, the trading port of Izmir on the eastern coast of the Aegean Sea rose to prominence, and cotton, grains, fruits, livestock products, and other products from the hinterland of Western Anatolia were shipped to Izmir by camel caravans.
