Japanese: 声母 - せいぼ（英語表記）initial

A term in Chinese phonology that refers to the initial consonant of a syllable (not including the [j] or [w] that follows it). Chinese syllables are formed by combining initial consonants and final sounds, with tones overlaying the whole. Modern Mandarin Chinese "long" (cháng) is interpreted as /čaŋ ² /, with the initial consonant /č/ and the final sound /aŋ/, plus the addition of a tone (2 tones). Similarly, the initial consonant of "ma" (horse) is /m/, and the initial consonant of "gao" (high) is /g/. The 36 characters in the Yunjing roughly represent the system of initial consonants in Middle Chinese.
