According to the Metamorphoses by the Latin poet Ovid, when Silenus, the foster father of the god of wine, Dionysus, was captured by villagers while drunk and brought to the royal palace, Midas entertained Silenus for ten days, and in return Midas was offered one wish in return. Midas wished for everything he touched to turn to gold. However, when his wish was granted, even food and drink turned to gold, so the distressed king turned to the god of wine for help, and after purifying himself in the Pactolus River as instructed, he was finally able to return to his original body. …
